How to Create a Meaningful Eulogy

Planning a funeral for a loved one is one of the most important tasks you will ever undertake. It’s your chance to give a gift to the person that is no longer with us, express your love for them, and appreciate the value they brought to your life.

During the funeral planning process, one of the decisions you will have to make is whether or not to personalize the eulogy. A eulogy can also help with the healing process. Below, we’re helping you choose right person to give the eulogy as well as some tips for what to include.

What is a Eulogy?

A eulogy is a speech given during the funeral ceremony that talks about the life and character of the decedent. It gives the opportunity to share memories of the person and how they affected your life, as well as their loved one’s lives.

What Should be Said during a Eulogy

The best eulogies are ones that are personal, capture the decedent’s personality, and include personal memories. Honor their memory, give thanks, and acknowledge their accomplishments and those closest to them.

Tips for Giving a Eulogy

Writing a eulogy can feel overwhelming, especially when it comes to deciding what exactly you should say. Here are some ideas to get you started.

  • Set aside your fears and focus on your loved one and the gift you are giving them by giving the eulogy at their services.
  • Before you start writing, take time to think about their life, their accomplishments, and how they impacted your life.
  • Brainstorm ideas by randomly writing out your thoughts, memories, and ideas as they come to you.
  • Include thoughts and memories from other individuals that were important in the decedent’s life.
  • Look through photos that remind you of their important qualities.
  • Write a draft and take time away from it before reading through and making revisions.
  • Get a second opinion on the eulogy by someone that was close to the decedent to ensure you didn’t leave anything out and reduce any rambling.
  • Present your eulogy with love, speak loudly, and remember that it’s okay to take a pause as you speak.
