Alice Marie Withee (Manwaring)

October 19, 1924 – December 24, 2019

Alice Withee, surrounded by her loved ones, went home to her Lord on Christmas Eve December 24, 2019.

Born in Litchfield, Maine to parents Giles Manwaring and Vesta (Manwaring) Freeman. Alice grew up in Westbrook, Maine and attended the Westbrook school system. After graduating from Westbrook High School Alice attended Gorham State Teachers College earning a Bachelors degree in education. She began her teaching career at Cottage Farms School in Cape Elizabeth, Maine where she met the love of her life, Everett Withee and they married 6 months later. They had two children and nine wonderful years together until Everett passed in November 1957 leaving Alice a widow at 32 years old. Alice taught in the Cape Elizabeth School system for another 6 years before moving her family to Cumberland Center, Maine and taught at Greely Jr. High for the remainder of her career. Teaching was her passion, and was reflected through the love of her students and respect of her colleagues. She was active in her community, always the first mother to drive the kids somewhere or do what needed to be done while working full time and balancing life. She was a voracious reader and educator. She was very involved in the planning and building of Faith Baptist Church in North Yarmouth, Maine and became the choir director and pianist, Sunday school teacher along with deaconess at the church for many years to follow.

Alice’s faith was unwavering setting an example for all who knew her. Generous and warm, loving and kind, Alice opened her heart and her home to all. Later in life she was unable to physically do the daily tasks that she wanted to do but never complained and was always there for all of us, offering her love and comfort.

Alice is survived by Pam Withee and Gail Delano, Pam’s partner Santa Fareri, sister-in-law, Anne Manwaring, many loving nieces and nephews and special friends.

Services will be held on January 4, 2020 at West Bridgewater Community Church 83 Elm Street, West Bridgewater, MA at 11:00 am.
