Alan Donaldson, of Scituate, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 10, 2025, at South Shore Hospital. He was 87 years old.
Born on June 10, 1937, in Portland, Oregon, Alan lived a remarkable life filled with curiosity, adventure, creativity, and a profound connection to nature. Growing up in the Panama Canal Zone, he developed an enduring love for exploration, photography, and water, passions that guided him throughout his life.
Alan proudly served in the Navy, then moved to Santa Cruze where he honed his skills as a photographer, eventually working as a contractor for NASA at Moffett Field. Beyond his professional life, Alan was deeply philosophical, identifying as a Buddhist and believing deeply in the interconnectedness of people, energy, and nature.
Alan found immense joy in life's simple pleasures: scenic drives, kayaking, cooking delicious meals, reading historical narratives, and spending cherished time with his family. Known for his sharp wit and wisdom, he often reminded others, “moderation in everything, including moderation,” and emphasized punctuality as a sign of respect, believing firmly that “everything is connected.”
He is survived by his beloved wife, Eileen Donaldson; his devoted son, Ben Donaldson; and his cherished grandson, Holden Donaldson. Alan was preceded in death by his siblings.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 3 at 2:00 PM at First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church, 330 First Parish Road, Scituate, MA 02066.
