Alice L Williams

Alice Louise Williams was born in Boston on January 4,1929 to the late Jacob Williams and Hilda Gaynor. She had one older sister Doris. Her parents were Jamaican born, a culture she took much pride in.

She attended elementary school and Roxbury Memorial High School in Boston. She was also baptized at St Cyprian's Episcopal Church in Boston.

She had her 1st job at age 14 in a factory during the weekend. She also went to church with her family on Sundays and many evenings during the week for different programs. Alice took piano lessons as a child, was an avid reader and into adulthood, enjoyed music, dancing, played tennis, board games and learning other languages. She rode horses and had a beloved border collie dog named Spot. In later years she had many cats, Fluffy, Taffy, Piano and Shower.

When she turned 16, she graduated from High School and went to live with her Aunt Bea in New York. She had a typing job. She also modelled for a Black Modelling agency in the 40's. She enjoyed concerts, plays and dance clubs. She had many friends.

In 1952, back in Boston, Alice married James Peacock. In June of 1956 they had a daughter Beverly, her only child. In 1961 Alice returned to school. She got a bachelor's degree in 1965 from Boston University. After that she got a master's degree in counselling-education from Boston State University. In 1966 she moved to Brookline. Her most notable professional accomplishment was founding the Commonwealth Day School in the 1970s. She did this with the partnership of a colleague.

In the early 80's Alice remarried to Paul Kofi-Fleyn from Ghana. They settled in Brookline, moving to Natick in 1983.

Alice travelled extensively. As a child she went to Jamaica to see relatives. As an adult, she went to stay for a period, taking Beverly with her when she was age 2. During her life she, also went to Barbados, Mexico, British Columbia and Quebec in Canada, England and France twice, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Russia and Ukraine. As well, Israel, Egypt, China and Iran. She also went to Ghana and then later to Kenya and Tanzania. In the US, she went to New York, Conn, Rhode Island, Cape Cod, Philadelphia, California, Washington State, Washington DC, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, Arizona and New Mexico.

Alice is survived by her daughter Beverly Peacock-Barge and son-in-law Kirk Barge, beloved grandsons Frank Peacock and Hakeem Barge. Including nieces Nancy Stevens, Diane Green, Christine Wall; nephew Rev. Bruce Wall; their children; and great-grand nieces and nephews.
