Arthur Perette Obituary

Arthur J. Perette Jr., 88, of Braintree, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, January 6, 2025. Born in Quincy, he was affectionately known as Jack to his family and Art to his friends. He grew up in West Quincy with his parents, the late Arthur J. Perette Sr. and Esther (Foley), as well as his sister Doreen.

Art graduated from Quincy High School in 1955 and enlisted in the Navy the same year. During his service, Art earned a certification from the US Fleet Sonar School in Key West, Florida, followed by a specialized sonar certification in San Diego, California. In October 1956, he reported for duty aboard the USS Joyce (DE-317) in Newport, Rhode Island. The USS JOYCE departed Rhode Island on July 17, 1957, and arrived at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on August 18, 1957, where it conducted radar picket and anti-submarine warfare patrols in the Midway Atolls and Marshall Islands. On May 13, 1958, the USS JOYCE sailed to Eniwetok Atoll in the Pacific Proving Grounds to conduct search and rescue operations and data collection as part of OPERATION HARD TACK. Between May 13 and June 17, 1958, USS Joyce (DE-317) participated in at least nine nuclear tests. All military and civilian personnel involved in these tests are recognized as Atomic Veterans due to their exposure to radiation fallout. Art was honorably discharged as a Petty Officer in 1959 and served in the reserves until completing his military service in 1963.

After his discharge, Art worked for Raytheon, then Teledyne Philbrick, before ending his career at Haemonetics. Art's true passion was fishing; he loved both fresh and saltwater fishing and was fortunate to own boats throughout his life. He enjoyed designing fishing lures and tying flies, often sharing these experiences with friends. He was particularly proud to teach the art of fly fishing to his grandson Jared, passing on his passion.

Art had a wide range of interests and hobbies. He loved music, played the acoustic guitar, sang, and even wrote and published a song. He followed Graham Hancock’s work on ancient civilizations and Gobekli Tepe, and enjoyed the writings of Christopher Hitchens. He had a keen interest in astronomy, new discoveries in the universe, and space exploration, along with a fascination for Bigfoot. A devoted fan of the Patriots and Tom Brady, Art cherished his family above all. His daughter Heather and grandchildren Brianna and Jared were his greatest sources of pride and joy.

Art will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his daughter, Heather Perette of Braintree; his granddaughter Brianna and grandson Jared, both of Braintree; his sister Doreen Murray of Braintree; and his three nephews, Michael Lafavre of Weymouth, Bruce Lafavre (Kathy) of Nantucket, and Peter Lafavre (Erika) of Weymouth, along with grandnieces and nephews.

Family and friends are warmly invited to celebrate Arthur’s life on Friday, January 31, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Hamel-Lyon Chapel, 650 Hancock Street, Quincy, MA 02170.
