Doris Currie Obituary

Doris Currie died peacefully at the Marina Bay Alliance Health nursing facility on Jan. 7, 2025.  Doris was born March 16, 1935, in Jamaica Plain and spent the majority of her life in Quincy. The youngest of 9 children, she treasured her siblings and kept in close contact with them throughout her life. She married John Currie, a Korean War veteran, in 1953.

She worked several jobs as a secretary, but largely with Medical Personnel Pool at the Customs House in downtown Boston. She was also a lunch matron later in life at the Clifford Marshall Elementary School.

But her greatest focus and achievements rest in the nurturing of her family. She was a devoted mother to two – John ("Flicky") and Joline – and grandmother to seven – John Little, Laura Petrucci, Jeffrey Currie, Clinton Currie, Jason Currie, Jennifer Currie, and Jonathan Powers. She is also survived by many great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She was fiercely protective of children and sought to make sure every one of them within her reach was loved and provided for.

Her incredible kindness and generosity was known throughout Quincy and beyond as a great many people affectionately called her Nana and took up conversation with her, whether it be around the neighborhood, on the city bus, at the supermarket, etc. Simply put, she truly made life better for those fortunate enough to be around her.

She was a great fan of Elvis, seeing him in concert at the Boston Garden in 1971, frequently filling the house with his music, and even dragged the family to Memphis in 1987 to honor the 10th anniversary of his death. A very memorable trip fraught with sketchy campgrounds, long days in the car, and crazy characters -- she loved every minute of it.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Funeral Service Tuesday at 11 AM in the Hamel-Lydon Chapel, 650 Hancock St., Quincy.  Visiting hours Monday 5-7 PM.  Burial in Pine Hill Cemetery, Quincy.
