Gail Zawacki

Gail Maria Zawacki passed away early in the morning of June 9, 2022 shortly following a diagnosis of cancer.

Born in 1954, she was raised on a farm in Ipswich, Massachusetts with her three sisters, surrounded by the ocean. She would carry her love of nature, water, and animals throughout her life, caring for numerous pets along the way, and devoting her efforts and energy to myriad environmental and conservation causes.

Gail had three daughters, Alice, Zosia (Sophie), and Maxine, whom she loved fiercely and in whom she instilled an appreciation of the natural world. Both resourceful and stubborn, Gail raised her daughters with unlimited devotion.

Gail was a consummate cook; she enjoyed seeking the best ingredients and brought countless people together with her amazing food.

In her later years, Gail retired to Stockton Springs, Maine, where she lived by the ocean with her papillon, Camus. She continued to welcome many to her home, and cook countless delicious meals for them.

Gail was ever the bride married to amazement: no one will ever match her sharp wit and intelligence, her achingly passionate gaze upon the natural world shared so creatively through her writings, and her humor - tinged ever so slightly with healthy cynicism.

May she be in peace knowing that she was loved and respected beyond measure, that her generosity of time, thoughts, ideas and knowledge has enriched all who have crossed her path.

She is survived by her sisters, daughters Alice, Sophie, and Maxine and their husbands Dennis, Shawn, and Aaron, as well as her granddaughters Elyse and Evangeline, and dear Camus.
