James A. McNeil

James A. McNeil of Quincy, affectionately known as Macca, passed away peacefully June 27th surrounded by his loving family. He was born in South Boston on August 18, 1943.

Jim proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1962 to 1965 during the Vietnam War. After his military service, he joined the Quincy Police Department in 1970 and devoted more than 30 years to serving the people of Quincy. He retired in 2005 as a Captain, earning the respect of his fellow officers and the community, through his integrity, leadership, and commitment to public service.

Jim shared 58 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife and childhood sweetheart, Maureen Stedman McNeil. Together they built a loving family that was always the center of his life.

He was the devoted father of Sergeant James McNeil of Milton, a member of the Quincy Police Department; Kerri McNeil of Quincy; Erin Szilva and her husband, Adam, of Quincy; and Brendan McNeil of Hanover also a member of the Quincy Police Department and his wife, Christina.

Jim was a proud grandfather to Molli, Kira, Sean, Connor, Jaxon, Leila, Colton and Isla. He loved being involved in their lives and rarely missed a sporting event, recital, school function, or special milestone. They will always remember his love, encouragement, and the pride he took in each of them. He also leaves behind his brother John J. McNeil and his wife Patricia of Manomet, MA and his sister, Clare McNeil, SCN of Nazereth, KY.

Jim will be remembered for his strength, kindness, humor and devotion to his family. He lived a life of service, always putting others before himself. His love for his family, his commitment to his community, and the example he set will remain with all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial Thursday July 2, 2026 at 11 AM in Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, Quincy.  Visiting hour prior to the Mass from 10-11 Am in the Church.  Burial Mount Wollaston Cemetery, Quincy.  Donations may be made to www.dementiasociety.org.
