Jean (Strong) Callahan, 83, was the daughter of the late Reverend Donald and Nancy Strong. She left her earthly home on Saturday, March 7, 2026, after a fall resulting in complications. She will be remembered for her love of family and friends as well as her faith, kindness and love of beauty. She was a unique and special woman. She always dressed to the nines, coiffed, nails done and color coordinated. She believed that one should always look their best and she always did!
Jean had a full and interesting life. Being a preacher’s kid (PK), she moved around as a child. She loved her high school years in East Rockaway, L.I., New York where she was the Belle of the Ball. She maintained contact with her high school friends to the end and loved 50’s music.
Jean attended Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, MA. She had may fulfilling jobs at John Hancock Ins. Boston, in banking, at Howard Johnson’s corporate office, as an office manager in marketing and research, and finally, as a temp at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. Following retirement, she enjoyed volunteering at a local nursing home, where she joined a musical group to entertain the residents each month. She also volunteered at Cape Cod Hospital in the gift shop and was honored as Volunteer of the Month.
Jean’s love of beauty extended to her home and gardens. She loved to entertain and share her good fortune with family and friends. She loved the water and had beautiful homes, on the ocean in Hull and on John’s Pond in Mashpee, MA, she also loved her pets and Lexi, her beloved Maltese, was by her side through thick and thin.
This past year, Jean moved to Discovery Village, Quincy. She made some wonderful friends there and so appreciated the staff and the many activities. “Mix and Mingle” always put a smile on her face.
She was predeceased by her husband, John (Jack) T. Callahan. They had 30 years together entertaining, boating, flying in Jack’s plane and traveling to Europe, Hawaii and to their snowbird home in West Palm Beach, FL.
She is survived by her sibling Janet (Garrett) Powell of Hingham, niece Heather (Jon) Jarvis, Jake (Ginna) Jarvis, Sam Jarvis, Daniel Jarvis and Hayden Jarvis, Sue Anne and Renay DiLazzaro.
Jean was a beautiful soul and bright light on this earth, and her presence will continue to shine upon all of those who loved her. Wherever she went, she was loved. A gathering to honor the life of Jean will be held in late June.
Jean loved attending Glastonbury Abbey and served as greeter. If you wish, donations may be made to the Abbey at 16 Hull Street, Hingham, MA 02043.
