Luis Medeiros Obituary

Luis Antonio Medeiros was born in the city of Angra Do Heroísmo, Ilha Terceira, Açores Islands, Portugal. He began his pastry career at the pastelaria O Forno in Angra, which included a sponsored six-month apprenticeship studying at a specialized baking program for Portuguese pastries in Sintra, Portugal. In his 20s he immigrated to the United States, specializing in Portuguese pastries at a Portuguese pastry café in Cambridge - his specialty was in creating multiple flavors of the famous Pastel de Nata. He eventually became the Pastry Chef for the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, going on to become the Pastry Chef for the Fox Hill Village retirement community in Westwood for 22 years. Luis was adored by the residents and delighted in making them exquisite desserts from scratch and high-quality ingredients.

While in Portugal he also was the ballroom dance champion of the Açores, placing 3rd in all of Portugal - he always said it was due to "politics" that he didn't place higher. He became a United States citizen and was very proud to call himself an American, proudly wearing shirts with the US flag on many occasions. After several years together, Luis and Dr. Michael Weinberg were able to be among the first same sex couples in Massachusetts to be married (their relationship spanned 33 years together) - Luis made the wedding cake of course, a three-tiered cake with chocolate butterflies covered in edible gold luster dust. He was a creative savant in life, creating delicious pastries, desserts, and cakes (especially wedding cakes), immersing himself in interior home and landscape design, and adding his special je ne sais quoi to everything he touched, including his magical (pastry and non-pastry) cooking abilities. He was the most amazing cat dad to several Persian cats through the ages, as well as the best husband one could have.

In the past several years Luis and Michael had been making many trips to Terceira and elsewhere in Portugal, reconnecting with family and friends and envisioning retirement there down the road. Luis always considered Terceira his home and was sad whenever he left, but always excited when returning.

The past year was a courageous and steadfast battle with cancer, unfortunately with Luis ending up in Hospice and passing on Friday June 19. He was surrounded by family, friends, and love.

There will be a Mass on June 27, 5:30pm at St. Anthony's Church 400 Cardinal Medeiros Avenue Cambridge, MA.

His memorial service will be hosted by his former employer, Fox Hill Village, on July 12 at 1:30pm at Fox Hill Village 10 Longwood Drive Westwood, MA.

Fox Hill is honored to do this for Luis and the residents are very upset that they have lost a cherished member of their community.

Apresento as minhas condolências à família e amigos. Que a paz de Deus os acompanhe e que o repouso eterno seja para sempre com ele. Que descanse em paz.
