Michaela Ursenescu passed away peacefully on July 1, 2025, at the age of 83.
She was born on August 4, 1941, in Bucharest, Romania, to George Ursenescu and Teodora Zalomir, and grew up with sisters Gabriela (Gabi) and Adrianna (Nușu). She was Mela or Buha to her friends.
She immigrated to Quincy, MA, in fall of 2001, where she would spend her next chapters living with her son Cristian Popa and daughter-in-law Andrea (Scott). Her proudest roles were as mother to her dear son and “Gaga” to her granddaughters Gabrielle (Gabi) and Maia Popa – she truly loved them with all her heart. She also relished being a bonus grandmother to Zoe, Moss, Liam, and Ethan Scott, and was dearly loved by the extended Scott family.
She loved snowdrop flowers in early spring, sunflowers in summer, beach getaways, road trips in her Trabant, hazelnuts, and chocolate ice cream. She enjoyed bird watching with coffee and a cigarette in her backyard, singing along to her favorite opera music, and always saved the very best table scraps to feed her dogs covertly under the table. She loved bugs and animals, the wonder of the earth, and the mysteries of the universe.
She sat in the first row of the auditorium to watch her granddaughters at every play and school concert, and at the kitchen bench cleaning garlic and parsley while Cris cooked. She loved the magic of Christmas morning and the optimism of ringing in the New Year. Nothing brought her more joy than a house full of family and laughter.
She is survived by family in the US and Romania, as well as lifelong friends. She loved fiercely and was fiercely loved. As she was fond of saying: “Te iubesc de mă topesc!” (“I love you so much I melt!”)
A viewing will be held Sunday, July 6, at 2:00 pm, followed by a 3:00 pm Christian Orthodox funeral service at Hamel-Lydon Chapel, 650 Hancock St, Quincy, MA.
…………..
Şi dacă
Şi dacă ramuri bat în geam
Şi se cutremur plopii,
E ca în minte să te am
Şi-ncet să te apropii.
Şi dacă stele bat în lac
Adâncu-i luminându-l,
E ca durerea mea s-o împac
Înseninându-mi gândul.
Şi dacă norii deşi se duc
De iese-n luciu luna,
E ca aminte să-mi aduc
De tine-ntotdeauna.
- Mihai Eminescu
…………..
And if
And if the branches tap my pane
And the poplars whisper nightly,
It is to make me dream again
I hold you to me tightly.
And if the stars shine on the pond
And light its sombre shoal,
It is to quench my mind's despond
And flood with peace my soul.
And if the clouds their tresses part
And does the moon outblaze,
It is but to remind my heart
I long for you always.
- Mihai Eminescu
