Robin Sternbergh Callahan

Robin Sternbergh Callahan passed away peacefully on June 15 th , 2026. Born on October 20 th , 1946, in Los Angeles to Robert and Helen Wigger, Robin was the much-loved wife of Ray Callahan, devoted mother to Van Sternbergh and daughter-in-law Melissa, delightfully indulgent grandmother to Rilla, Tuck, Gabriel and Melissa, and a stalwart, sometimes intimidating, big sister to Mary Joyce, Karen, Susan and Clement Wigger. From an early age, Robin exhibited a strength of spirit that put her in good stead as one of the earliest women to attend Harvard Business School. While there, noting that the men’s dorms were much nicer than the off-campus women’s housing, Robin successfully petitioned to the HBS administration to allow women to reside in all-male dorms and became one of the first women at Harvard University to do so.

She brought this indomitable spirit to a long and successful career at IBM where she rose to become general manager of its global distribution channels and was, in addition, a member of IBM’s worldwide management council. Known as the “ultimate planner”, who often rose before dawn to communicate directives to her team, Robin was described by colleagues as decisive, determined, direct and, in sum, “a great leader who propelled her business unit to achieve tremendous success.”

In retirement, Robin sat on the Board of Directors at Carlisle Companies, Inc., and was president of the Sailfish Point Homeowners Association. In addition, she purchased large homes in Nantucket, Massachusetts and Stuart, Florida expressly to host hordes of family, friends, and friends of friends, and provided all her guests with the most wonderful, and generous, hospitality. She asked only that each visitor review the daily timed activities schedule posted on the refrigerator and woe betide the guest who arrived late for dinner or for a planned event as they then faced the inevitable chilly response “And did you not look at the schedule?” And if visitors wanted to know how they ranked as a guest of Robin’s, they had only to peruse her renowned annual ten- page pictorial Christmas letter and count the number of pictures of themselves in the letter. Few or no pictures were not a good sign. Many pictures guaranteed a coveted return invitation.

In sum, Robin’s was both a life well scheduled and one filled with generosity, love, family and friends.
