Vladimir Mashtaler, 87, of Boston, Massachusetts, peacefully passed away on September 4, 2025, after a period of declining health.
Born and raised in Zhmerynka, Ukraine, Vladimir built his career in the agriculture industry as a talented mechanical engineer. He was widely admired for his skill in troubleshooting and solving complex problems and deeply respected for his generous and helpful nature, always going out of his way to lend a hand.
After retiring in 2000, Vladimir and his beloved wife, Fira, immigrated to the United States with the hope of one day reuniting their family. Two years later, he proudly sponsored his son, Oleg, and his young family to join him in the U.S.
Vladimir loved spending time with his family, playing cards, and fishing. A hardworking man who never took anything for granted, he was known for finding value where others saw none—often collecting discarded lottery tickets and surprising his family by redeeming overlooked winnings.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 65 years, Fira (Millerman) Mashtaler; his children, Oleg Mashtaler and his wife Oksana of Newton, and Lilya Loivska of Vinnytsia, Ukraine; his grandchildren, Anastasia Pontacoloni and her husband Nicholas of Wayland, and Kristina Mashtaler of Newton; and his great-grandson, Roman Pontacoloni of Wayland. He is also survived by his siblings, Oleksi Nabok and Zhanna Kucher, both of Ukraine. Vladimir was predeceased by his grandson Denis Loivsky and brothers Anatoliy and Stepan Nabok.
Family and friends are invited to visiting hours on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, from 10:00 to 11:00am in St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 24 Orchardhill Road, Jamaica Plain. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the church, with interment at Mount Benedict Cemetery, 409 Corey Street, West Roxbury.
