Warren "Rico" Kenney, Jr. Obituary

Warren F. “Rico” Kenney, Jr., 70, of Squantum died peacefully at home on the afternoon of March 25, 2024 surrounded by the love, comfort and care of his family.  He was a son of the late Warren F. and Julia A. (King) Kenney.

Raised in South Boston, Warren graduated with high honors from the former Don Bosco Technical High School before joining the tradeshow and convention industry in the early 1970’s. Rico spent his entire career in the same industry as a proud member of Teamsters local 82 (later becoming Local 25) until retiring in 2014.

Always positive and upbeat, Warren was also a consummate practical joker. He will long be remembered for his love of family, of sunrises, for his talent for gardening and caring for the plants in and around his home, his love for camping and for cooking, and how he always participated in the July 3rd fireworks celebrations on Orchard Beach in Squantum with his nephew Annar. He really loved music -especially the Rolling Stones, Eagles and Bob Marley- boxing as a Golden Glove boxer for a time in his youth, the fun-filled trips he took to Jamaica, and enjoying some quality herb.

He was the father of Michael Kenney and his wife Crystal of North Weymouth, Damien Thornton of Chestnut Hill, and Marco Penaflor, Sr. and his fiancé Ariana Cain of Fall River. Cherished grandfather of Michaela O’Malley of Dorchester, Emily O’Malley of Squantum, Lilly Thornton of Rockland, Jacqueline Thornton, and especially his “best friend” Grandson; six-year-old Marco, Jr. He was eagerly anticipating the birth of his latest grandson, River Warren Penaflor, who is due in July. Dear brother of Christine Kenney-Norton and her husband Donald of Squantum, Judith Kenney-Downey and her husband Arthur of Squantum, Charles Kenney of Squantum and the late Jacqueline Thornton. Also survived by his Aunt Kay Kenney of South Boston, many nieces and nephews including Danielle Doyle, Annar Thornton and a large group of extended family and dear friends including his canine companion, Sasha.

Warren "Rico's" family would like to thank his caregivers, DeeDee, Bridget, Ann, and Lisa for their excellent care, kindness and love.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend his Celebration of Life and memorial visiting hours Thursday April 11, 2024, from 4:00-7:00pm at the Hamel-Lydon Chapel, 650 Hancock Street, Wollaston.
