Wolfgang Walter Hayum was born in Stuttgart, Germany in 1927. He came to the United States via Switzerland and Cuba in 1941. He was a 13 year old passenger on the death-ship “Navemar” from Spain to Cuba, and from there to New York 5 months later.
He attended Lake Grove School on Long Island and graduated from Albright College in 1950, and subsequently post-graduate studies at C.W. Post College of L.I. University. He served in the U.S. Army from 1945-1947.
Following his graduation from college in 1950, he married the former Jane Reynolds of Alexandria, Virginia and together they left for Sydney, Australia where he was offered a job as reporter on the Sydney Daily Telegraph.
Subsequently he founded Australia’s first long playing record company, Diaphon Records and also Festival Records.
He returned to the United States in 1953 and worked for Columbia Records as Marketing Director for its newly formed Epic Records Division.
In 1961, he joined the Polaroid Corporation and remained there in Sales until 1967, when he launched Photo-Media Ltd. and Universal Media Inc. in New York. Both companies were international stock-picture agencies with their own production studios.
He lived in New York City and New Paltz, NY and retired in 1992, when he and his wife moved to Marshfield, MA and in 1998 Marina Bay in Quincy.
He has served as a past Trustee of the Marina Point Condominiums.
In addition to his wife of many years, he is survived by 5 children and 9 grandchildren.
He was a past member of the Overseas Press Club in New York.
Walter will be greatly missed by family and friends.
