Xiuming Zhou 周修铭 Obituary

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Xiuming Zhou, of Boston, Massachusetts, on February 19th, 2024, at the age of 90 years.

Born in Shanghai, China, on February 4th, 1934, Xiuming was a prodigious student from a young age, showcasing his brilliance, especially in math and physics. He graduated from Shanghai Yucai High School in 1954 and immediately joined the prestigious Physics Department of Peking University. In his junior year, he was among the first selected for the newly established Department of Technical Physics, graduating with honors in 1957. His pioneering work in nuclear physics, especially in isotope separation alongside luminaries like Xingnan Jing and Yunbin Liu, has profoundly influenced the field. In his twenties, Xiuming became one of the youngest Research Fellows at the Institute of Atomic Energy of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He was one of the first to be awarded the title of Professor of Engineering, and he received a high honor from the State Council of China as an expert from the State Council of China.

Xiuming's voracious appetite for learning continued well into his later years, undeterred by the vision problems that eventually curtailed his nightly reading sessions. He found joy in exploring the mysteries of the universe, often sharing this passion with his grandchildren, teaching them to look at the world with curiosity and awe.

Xiuming Zhou was a beloved husband to Boying Liu, a devoted father to Zhihong and her husband Qingguo Tian, Zhijing and her husband Jianggang Guo, and Zhiqi and her husband Hao Xu. He was a cherished grandfather to Zhicheng Tian, Jerry Guo, Jason Guo, and Ashley Xu. Xiuming's legacy is not only in his scientific achievements but also in the love and wisdom he imparted to his family. His children and grandchildren will carry forward his legacy of inquiry and kindness.

A funeral service to honor Xiuming's life will be held at 9:30 AM on March 3rd, 2024, at Hamel-Lydon Chapel in Quincy, MA.

We bid farewell to a remarkable man whose impact will be felt for generations to come. Xiuming's dedication to his family, his groundbreaking work in physics, and his insatiable curiosity about the world have left an indelible mark on all who knew him. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered with affection and admiration.
